Twitter Getter... Is the TwitterGetter Tool on Twitter Bad for Business--Even if You're In Network Marketing www.TwitterGetter.com - Can It Do More Harm Than Good
Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 04:03AM News -- Tweeter Getter Gaining Popularity
Tweeter Getter seems like a cool idea. And if done correctly it might be.
Tweeter Getter works like this:
You refer your list to it, they refer their list... and you automatically build your followers list on Twitter through an exponential viral process that happens automatically (growing your followers list on Twitter potentially into the thousands or tens of thousands).
But before you go out and start promoting it, think twice.
Why?
Well... because it could be bad for business.
I'll explain why... and also why (and how) I promoted Tweeter Getter. By the way, it IS building my list. I'll also share why this allows me to continue to provide value to more people.
More About Tweeter Getter
Twitter, like all successful social networking communities, is based on real people talking about real things. Like anywhere on the net, it's all about value. To the average person, 'value' may mean a good discussion on what they think about every day things, or what they're up to. For marketers looking to network and attract new prospects, 'value' means sharing tips, advice, opinions or anything else through dialogue that interests or benefits potential prospects.
What Makes TwitterGetter.com Bad for Your Business On Twitter
But when you share a link to an application like TwitterGetter with all your followers at Twitter, you send the wrong impression. You immediately reveal that the reason why you there is because you want to get something from 'them.'
While they may be true for many people and while this may be accepted as quite normal... it's not the message to send so vocally. Think about a young couple dating. The girl knows what the guy might be thinking about (at least one of the things he might be thinking about)... but you don't bring that subject up too soon with your date or you blow the deal. Game over.
People are attracted to people who understand the art of listening... people are attracted to those who give. When you advertise that your intention is first and foremost to grow your followers list, the focus is on what you get. For the average person out there (who is not in network marketing or into viral marketing tactics, which is most people) it's a big turn off to promote something like TwitterGetter.com
I posed this question to my community...
What does it mean to 'give value' vs. pitching or selling? Many 'newbies' to online business struggle with understanding the difference, or how 'giving value' can grow their business. If you'd like to share your answer to this question, post it on Twitter with @mikeklingler in front of your answer.

How and Why I Promoted Tweeter Getter...
I sent an email to my list about Tweeter Getter, including my link. But instead of just promoting it as a promise to get thousands of Twitter followers, I discussed the controversy of it, and why it may be bad for business. I shared why, in light of this, I was letting them know about it. I shared how others may perceive it. That in itself, is value. I didn't just promote it... I gave more than that.
But when I discuss Tweeter Getter at Twitter, I did not promote it blatently. In fact, when you use Tweeter Getter it automatically places a Tweet for others to see (which is a promotion of it to your Twitter followers). I deleted that post right away. On Twitter, instead of promoting Tweeter Getter I simply referred to blog posts where I discuss the pros and cons of it, and where they can join my Tweeter Getter if they decide to after they have considered my interpretation of the controversy and issues around using such a tool. Again, this is a value oriented way to share something.
The only place I will continue to promote TweeterGetter is at Traffic Exchanges, where marketers love this kind of stuff. There, I'm providing value to that target audience. You can learn more about that through this article where I'm keeping people posted on this topic as it unfolds. Go to: Controversial Tweeter Getter Tool Builds Your Twitter List
