Relationship Marketing: Learn to Use Relationship Marketing Strategies to Build Customer Loyalty

By LeeAnn McVey

Whether you are new to relationship marketing or a seasoned pro, you know that it's important to have relationship marketing strategies in place to build and maintain your customer's loyalty. Exactly what strategies you choose to use are going to be up to you but however you go about building and maintaining your customers, keep it sincere and genuine.

Creating a relationship with a new or existing customer is invaluable to the success of your business. You want to provide your customers with a good experience that gives them measurable results and most importantly gives you a good return on your investment, which is your time.

Each and every time you interact with a customer or prospect, whether it's via the telephone, email or even sending them a text, it's a golden opportunity to create trust while building a relationship with them. You are in essence 'romancing' the customer into wanting to know more about you and what you can offer them. The best way to do this is to get to know them. It's a proven statistic that people love to talk about themselves.

Building Healthy Customer Relationships - Ask a lot of questions

Find out what their wants and desires are. What are their expectations? Many times, people enter into a relationship expecting one thing and walk away to find they learned so much more. Your goal is to establish a healthy customer relationship with them by understanding what they really want and then providing them with an answer or solution based on their needs. How do you do this? By asking questions.

You want to learn the reasons why a customer loves or hates or is indifferent to doing business with you. Not everyone is going to be a perfect fit and that is okay too. Don't be afraid to walk away from a customer either. This is about developing a relationship with this customer and if you or them are not having that moment of attraction or the feeling that you are gelling with the other person, then excuse yourself gracefully and make your exit. Remember you are establishing a relationship here which usually means long-term.

You want this to be a happy, healthy relationship and by asking questions you are learning what makes them tick. Once you identify your most profitable customers and then develop those relationships; they will keep coming back to you each and every time because they know you value them and their time.

Relationship Marketing Strategies - Do's and Do Not's

  • DO have a plan. Don't walk into a meeting or pick up the phone without having a plan. For some this may mean having a list in writing of possible questions you can ask. Others are quick on their feet and know instinctively the next question to ask based on the customer/prospect's answer.
  • DON'T talk about your product first. By asking questions you are learning what your customer's pain or needs are first.
  • DO explain your product value. You shouldn't have to defend your product's price. When your customer can see its value, the price won't matter!
Customer Loyalty - Be Sincere & Honest!

Nothing is more frustrating then speaking with someone who isn't sincere or honest. Being honest and sincere while building customer relationships translates into getting better business and achieving customer loyalty.

To be honest and sincere with your customers and potential customers, you need to objectively evaluate what you have to offer them. Your job is to give them all the clues necessary for them to make a decision without having to exaggerate. By asking questions and listening to what your customer's needs are, you can explain to them the unique benefit(s) your product or business has to offer them.

Does being honest mean telling the customer everything? This is up to you. What's important here is to give them everything relevant in helping him or her make an objective decision whether or not they buy from you today or in the future. One of the biggest benefits of speaking honestly and being sincere with someone is that you won't waste time with someone, who won't enjoy your work. Instead, you'll enjoy working with someone, who does.

Having and using relationship marketing strategies in place doesn't have to take you out of your comfort zone; but it does help to have a plan when building and maintaining customer loyalty. Make it a point to sit down and write your plan down on paper and be objective about your product or business and develop a good series of questions from that. You feel much more comfortable when speaking with your customers and this comfort will be conveyed and appreciated by your potential and future customers!

Lifetime Customer Loyalty - Be Yourself

Building and maintaining customer relationships is all about being yourself and enjoying life. In business it's all about gathering the people around you that you want to work with today and in the future. So why not enjoy your life by developing relationships with customers you want to work with and who also want to work with you!
