Twitter for Health Professionals

Medical companies (Humana), internationally known clinics (Mayo) as well as individual health practitioners have found a way to engage their customers / patients and build good will with Twitter.
Twitter is a free social networking site, frequently described as a micro-blog. Users can send and receive other user’s posts known as “tweets” (text based messages up to 140 characters in length). It is the third most used social network and the fastest growing social site with a current growth rate of 1382%.
Healthy Conversations
Five tips on using Twitter for customer / patient relations;
1. Be yourself, authentic
2. Be active, engage in the conversation
3. Respond quickly to direct messages
4. Always keep your conversations around your brand
5. Use Twitter as your customer / patient service platform
What to Tweet
First you will want to set up a schedule and designate someone to be in charge of tweets. I would recommend that you post to twitter 3 to 6 times a day. Each tweet should only take a minute or two to complete.
The content of your tweets should always be informational and of value to your customers / patients who are following you. As an example: if you are a pediatrician – to promote exercise for children you could tweet “An Active Child is a Happy and Healthy Child”. You could also tweet “today is well baby clinic day”.
You can use Twitter as a means of communication with your customers / patients special events or activities. If you are a Health Insurance company you could tweet something like “lose weight and receive special discount on your policy” or “It’s the New Year, Remember Your Deductible”.
If you have a website, which you should, I would post my web link 2 or 3 times a week. You could post “online appointments at www-YourSites-dot-com” or “call 000-00-0000 to make your appointment today”
You want your tweets to be helpful, informative and of value to your customers / patients.
