Anchor text is one of the most important things you need to understand when it comes to learning search engine optimization (seo) and getting a top 10 search engine placement. Not having a complete understanding of anchor text is one of the biggest mistakes I see new internet marketers make when they first learn seo and building their online presence.
Here we are going to look at what anchor text is, how to use it, and why you want to use to gain top search engine placement for your selected keyword phrases.
Search Engine Optimization Rules of Using Anchor Text
Anchor text refers to the words in a link that replace the actual web address. It is the text you click on to be taken to a new website or different page on the same site. When using anchor text always use a keyword phrase that relates to the page or site you are linking to. Never stuff random keywords into your anchor text. It should make sense and show value.
As an example in this article I’m giving a tutorial on search engine optimization, so I would create a link using the words learn seo as my anchor text and, as you can see when you click it, it takes you to another page that gives more information about seo training.
You can also create links using anchor text that relates to the content of the article, but on a different subject. In this example you can see that this article would relate to one that would benefit you if you want to learn internet marketing, or if you want to learn how to use the internet to generate your own leads. I can create a link using anchor text that relates to either of those two subjects because it adds value to the content I have here.
Why Anchor Text is effective SEO
You may have already heard that getting a top search engine placement requires you to have incoming links. So why is it important to use proper anchor text instead of just using the website URL or having a generic phrase like "click here" as your anchor text?
- It gives your readers an idea of what they will find when they click the link.
- It gives you better search engine placement for the keywords in your anchor text
Seeing the readers are going to be following your links, it is important to always make sure the anchor text is relevant to the site you are linking to or you visitors will be clicking the back button and leaving your site as fast as you can blink.
By placing high value relevant keyword phrases into your anchor text the search engines have a better idea of what your site is about giving you an edge over your competition. Also having other reputable sites linking to yours with high value keywords in the anchor text will boost your search engine ranking considerably for those specific keyword phrases.
As you learn seo and start implementing the little things, like the use of keyword rich anchor text, you will start to see your content rise in the search engines which will drive more traffic to your website resulting in more leads and more sales.
