Do the search engines use LSI in there algorithms?

This is a very good question and one that has spawned a whole lot of controversy. Some search engine experts believe that LSI would be computationally impossible because of too many pages being indexed, and too many words that are spelled the same, but have different meanings.

While that might very well be the case it is not what LSI was meant to do, if you look at the meaning above it states that LSI don’t understand or look at the meaning of the words, but rather at the associated words and pattern of words on the page.

When looking at it from that aspect it would seem like a wise thing to add the word computer or Mac in your article if you where talking about Apple. On the other hand if your article is about apples adding the word tree or fruit would get your page indexed for more relevant searches.

Whether the search engines use LSI can’t be proven with any real concrete evidence either way, but if you ask me it still makes sense to use related keywords in the body of your content.
