Search Engine Optimization Tutorial on Social Bookmarking

by Becky Joubert

What is Social Bookmarking?

Social Bookmarking is the process of saving your favorite websites or articles to a public Internet site, and tagging them with keywords so that they can be organized enough for others to find.

This Search Engine Optimization tutorial will show you a simple way to optimize your time and efforts by using Social Bookmarking to increase your traffic and search engine rankings by making the links to your content more visible and accessible to others.

You want people to be able to find your bookmarks in order to bring traffic to your site, because some of your bookmarks are going to be your own personal content. With traffic in mind, don’t set your bookmarks to “private” because they will only be visible to you and not the public traffic you’re bookmarking for.

Why Use Social Bookmarking for Search Engine Optimization?

Your bookmarked links literally point toward your content and highlights the fact that your content exists. If you want to let the search engines know that you have new content, just bookmark it. Then you won’t have to wait until the search engine robots get around to crawling and indexing your new work. Social Bookmarking can speed up the process considerably.

Search engines count your bookmarks as if they were votes as to the popularity of your content. The more bookmarks the better; always using good bookmarking practices as taught by Renegade University. You can easily hurt your link popularity by going about bookmarking in an incorrect manner, and actually hurting your search engine rankings.

Almost all Social Bookmarking sites provide toolbar buttons to make the practice of bookmarking very simple without having to add time and thought. In this Search Engine Optimization tutorial, Delicious is highlighted as a Social Bookmarking site because of ease of use and popularity.

Social Bookmarking can be time-consuming, but extremely effective.

Bookmarks are “instant links” for people that are searching for similar topics and find your links thru your bookmarking sites. That’s what you’re bookmarking for! Going thru Search Engine Optimization training and following Search Engine Optimization Rules, along with Social Bookmarking, will ensure good search engine rankings and proper indexing of your content.

Becky I can remember when I first heard about bookmarking, I just thought of it as marking it as a personal favorite but I have since realized the power of real bookmarking and doing it correctly.

Your tutorial is an excellent view of how to go about using public bookmarking sites and getting your best articles noticed.

Although I forget to do this simple step now and then, I must incorporate it again into my process on a normal basis. I can never learn to much about SEO.

Thanks for the great tutorial.

"If you want to let the search engines know that you have new content, just bookmark it."

Every vote counts when it comes to being found on the internet. Appropriate, responsible bookmarking helps the spider bots find you easier. I needed to be reminded of that. Thanks.

Becky,

This a great article on bookmarking. If someone is unclear about bookmarking. your article just cleared it up. I mean its very descriptive and to the point.

Also, thanks for the reminder, "The power of social bookmarking"

Popularity Contest

Becky, I so enjoy your analogy of comparing social bookmarking to a popularity contest. It's very true but it was also smart to include that there are right and wrong ways to bookmark your content. I always remind those I talk to about good social bookmarking habits: "Never, Never create any type of pattern when bookmarking!"

Thank you for the informative article!

Is it ok to bookmark your own stuff? I have been told that bookmarking your own stuff is considered spam. This point has always confused me and I do confess I have not used this strategy to its fullest because of this unclarity.
